Jaguar just unveiled its first ever SUV and the automaker made it very clear that the vehicle’s set for production and heading to a dealership near you sometime in the near future. A concept vehicle was unveiled way back in 2013, but the automaker put the real deal on display over this past week, and it’s an impressive vehicle to say the least.
Keeping Up with the Competition
With Jaguar sales beginning to lag a bit it’s taking measures to keep up with most of the other automakers in the industry who all sell some form of SUV. Even companies like Lamborghini and Rolls Royce have announced plans to produce their own SUVs, following in the footsteps of automakers like Porsche who is doing quite well with its two different SUV offerings.
Different than Land Rover SUV
What’s surprising about Jaguar producing an SUV is that it’s all Land Rover does. Both automakers are owned by the same company, Tata Motors of India, and they would almost be competing against one another by Jaguar entering the production race. But just as a Range Rover and the Porsche Macan don’t really compete with one another much, neither will Land Rover vehicles and a Jaguar SUV, because they have very different purposes. Sure they’re both designed to travel around stylishly and comfortably, but the Jaguar SUV is clearly going to have a sporty stance, while Land Rover favors a more rugged quality in its vehicles. That’s the key difference that will let SUVs from both automakers thrive alongside one another.
A Sporty SUV
The Jaguar F-Pace SUV is going to take design characteristics from the F-Type sports car giving it an edgy look that stands out as clearly Jaguar. While it won’t be brimming with as much power as the automaker’s F-Type sports car is thanks to the ultra-light body of the vehicle, it’s still going to have enough strength to be a blast to drive around, and it will have that distinctive Jaguar edge to it that stands out so much.
The F-Pace will be the very first Jaguar vehicle that offers automatic braking that will help the vehicle stop when a collision is detected up ahead. The vehicle will also come with sign detection and will update drivers on the speed limit by reading signs and tapping into GPS data that it has available.
Multiple Engine Options
When the F-Pace is released, it’s going to come with either a 340 HP or 380 HP V6 engine. Each option is supercharged to generate enough power. There’s also a 4-cylinder diesel option that offers 140 HP for those who want something a bit more economical that’s still packed with plenty of torque. The top version will go from 0 to 60 in just slightly over five seconds.
This SUV marks a big change for Jaguar, and hopefully enough success for the automaker to fund a bunch of awesome new sports cars, that’s exactly how things are working for Porsche lately.
We’d like to introduce you to the 2016 Range Rover Sport TD6. A highly refined diesel variant of the Range Rover sport that stands up to the gasoline version in nearly every way, while surpassing it in a few areas. It’s a truly rugged vehicle that should be considered by someone looking for a mix of power, performance, luxury and efficiency.
Nobody Knew it Was Diesel
Land Rover had a group of people test out the Range Rover Sport TD6 in a blind test setting and not one of the drivers was able to identify that the vehicle was a diesel model at all. That’s pretty shocking news, and something that future buyers should take note of. Even well-made diesels today have some characteristics that give them away a bit. For instance, most of the modern diesels are still quite a bit louder than your standard gasoline engine, according to all the testers who took the TD6 out for a drive, this isn’t so with the Range Rover model.
Land Rover went to a great deal of trouble to make the Range Rover Sport TD6 as quiet as possible. The engine block is composed of compacted graphite iron, that helps reduce the vibration from the engine noticeably. A series of engine mounts help to smooth the engine further and a specially designed acoustic windshield that’s been laminated for additional soundproofing is also in place to make the cabin quieter overall. While driving at highway speeds the engine is nearly inaudible, and another surprising thing is that the sound proofing doesn’t just help on the inside of the vehicle. Walk around the Range Rover Sport TD6 while it’s running and you’ll barely hearing the humming engine below.
Tough Offroad Prowess
If you’re crazy enough to take this 60K+ luxury vehicle to more rugged terrain, you’ll be very happy with the performance it puts out. This SUV can tackle steep ascents and descents with ease. It has plenty of ground clearance to get you over even the most uneven terrain, and you’ll love bringing it camping, or anywhere else that takes you off the beaten path a bit.
Light on its Feet
The Range Rover Sport TD6 weighs in at around 5,000 lbs, and it still manages to accelerate from 0 to 60 in just 7.1 seconds. that’s very quick, and it’s clear the vehicle is packing some serious power as soon as you step on the pedal. That’s thanks to the TD6 engine that offers 254 HP and a massive 440 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s just a touch slower than the gasoline version, and zips past other vehicles gleefully while out on the open highway. The Rover manages 25 MPG combined, and achieves a whopping 28 MPG in highway driving conditions.
Inside the Range Rover Sport TD6 you’ll be treated to a luxurious view that you would expect from any Land Rover vehicle. Supple leather coats the highly supportive seats both front and back. Fine wood and soft touch accents abound throughout the cabin. A competent media system sits above the center console and a range of cool feature are available through buttons right on that console.
The market for a Range Rover Sport is markedly limited, which is to be expected with the massive price tag that comes with it, but any buyer that decides on the TD6 variant is likely to be overjoyed with the performance. It’s a real treat to drive, and likely one of the most refined diesel models on the market today.
Anyone who’s ever towed a trailer behind their truck or SUV before knows how much of a paint it can be to change lanes safely. It’s tough seeing if there is someone behind you while driving, and it’s pretty difficult making sure your blind spots are clear as well. According to Land Rover there’s no reason that you shouldn’t be able to see behind the trailer your towing and that’s why the automaker developed technology to help solve this problem. It’s known as Transparent Trailer.
The concept behind transparent is really quite simple. You attach a camera to the back of the trailer you’re towing and your vehicle lets you see right through it by feeding you an image from the back of the trailer. The results are anything but simplistic though. You get a live feed looking out your rear window and it allows you to not only see the vehicles and other objects out behind your trailer by giving it a transparent look, but the feed still keeps the trailer outline in the video so that you’re aware of the object while making important driving decisions.
Back Up More Easily
While reversing using the system the indicator not only helps you see what is behind you, but the it also creates a set of guidelines that you can follow to backup successfully without hitting anything or anyone. Backing up with a trailer has never been easier than with this technology!
Keep an Eye on Interior Cargo
Not only does this tech help you remain aware of what’s around you on the road, but Land Rover also came up with technology known as Cargo Sense that will help you remain aware of your physical cargo as well. This tech keeps an eye on your trailer load and lets you know when the weight shifts substantially enough. Once you get an alert from the system you have the option of jumping to a camera inside the trailer to take a look at what’s going on, all while staying on the road and continuing along your trip. This makes it easy to avoid distractions while driving and to remain aware of what is going on without having to stop all the time. The system also keeps an eye on interior temperatures and lets the driver know when temperatures are getting high in the trailer. That’s particularly important when hauling around animals that have to be kept cool. The technology even keeps you up to date when you’re sitting in place and while away from the vehicle.
All the new technology comes together and makes travelling with trailer into a much more enjoyable experience. It’s simpler to do and comes with less risk than it used to.
Well the figures are finally out about the all-new Jaguar XE S and the numbers are pretty impressive to say the least. Not only is the level of power increased in the latest version of the vehicle, but the suspension system has been dramatically improved for a more comfortable and responsive ride. There are also some pretty clear styling adjustments that were made to the vehicle, but the performance and handling alterations are why most people will be upgrading to this model.
A Powerful Engine
The all-new Jaguar XE S is getting a powerful 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6 engine. This impressive setup produces around 362 HP and a potent 383 lb.-ft. of torque. that’s a whole lot of power to be packed into a vehicle this size. Slam down on the gas and you’ll peel off into the distance with smooth precision, just as it should be in a classy Jag like this. The engine is tied to a smooth and cooperative eight speed automatic transmission that switches between the gears effortlessly as you climb up to peak speed, which won’t take much time at all since 0 to 62 takes just 5.1 seconds if the rumors are true.
An Improved Ride Quality
Jaguar worked hard to enhance the ride quality of one of its top vehicle even further. The automaker relied on a high amount of aluminum in the construction of the frame and body of the vehicle. It makes use of double wishbones at both the rear and front of the vehicle and has a multi-link at the rear of the vehicle as well for a very complex system overall. To top it all off, this model will feature the S Adaptive Sports Suspension that gives the driver control over how the vehicle feels and handles.
This new vehicle will come in at around $104,200, making it far from a bargain vehicle, even by luxury standards, but that tag could be worth it if the changes feel as good as they look like they will. Once it’s out for testing purposes real acceleration figures will be readily available and everyone will know whether the 2016 Jaguar XE S lives up to its hype or not.
Infiniti vehicles are known for being high quality, but the latest Infiniti engine plant is taking things a step further and really pushing for high quality standards that you won’t see in many other high-production facilities around the world. The workers are trained more carefully, and an environment for quality production is carefully maintained throughout the build process.
About the Plant
Nissan recently opened up a plant designed to supply Infiniti with the engines that the company needs in Dercherd Tennessee. The plant is capable of producing up to 250,000 engines each year, and it’s able to do this while maintaining high levels of quality.
Top Quality Employees
To ensure that employees know what they are doing when they work with the machines to put together the quality engines, each worker has to learn how to hand-build a complete engine. By sending the workers through this rigorous training program, they each learn how an engine works and how to put it all together. It’s a step that might not seem very important to most automakers, but the executives at Infiniti understand that the only way a worker can confidently help with engine construction is if they understand how the entire engine goes together. By teaching every worker how to construct an engine, Infiniti is creating a plant of problem solving experts who can fix issues as they arise, and who understand how important every step of the engine creation process is.
The Training Program
Japanese plant workers are very familiar with the idea of takumi, or craftsmanship, and each new Infiniti worker spends their first week in takumi training. They will spend time learning about the engine, and then going through all the steps to build one by hand. This comprehensive training gives workers not only the knowledge about what a working engine should look like, but also what it should feel like. They understand what a machines piston should feel like, and what the correct torque of a cylinder head feels like. This makes it easier to troubleshoot things when problems arise.
Lowering Sound Levels
When trying to troubleshoot failing mechanical equipment it’s helpful to be working in a quiet environment. That’s why in the new Decherd Tennessee plant extensive measures were taken to lower sound levels throughout the building. A noisy area of the factory where pallets are washed was completely enclosed, and all the parts cars received soft rubber wheels instead of the hard wheels to lower their clatter during movement. The quieter environment makes it possible for workers to hear problems and report them to a maintenance specialist to fix the issue before parts are harmed by the defect.
Infiniti has always been known for producing top quality vehicles, but the added effort to make the engine process even better in their latest plant, will only serve to increase reliability, and improve the future perception of the automaker. It’s an impressive show of dedication to quality, and the need to stand apart from the competition.
When you invest all the money that it takes to purchase a luxury vehicle, it’s important to know how to care for it properly. Taking care of a luxury vehicle is similar to caring for a standard sedan, but it requires a bit more diligence.
Slam on the Gas
Unlike many standard vehicles, most luxury vehicles are designed to go fast. When you buy a jaguar it has a larger engine and is designed to go much faster than say a Toyota. That means that when you drive the vehicle through standard commuting conditions and regular stop and go traffic all the time it isn’t getting used the way it was meant to. Over time what’s known as engine crust will begin to develop on the engine and this can cause problems in the long-term. To remove the crust and keep the vehicle fresh and ready to perform, simply stomp on the accelerator from time to time and really push the engine. This helps clean it out and keep it primed for performance.
Regularly Put in Quality Oil
Unlike a standard vehicle any old oil won’t do when put into a luxury vehicle. Make sure to use a high quality synthetic solution, or the oil recommended by your Jaguar or Land Rover dealer. The recommended oil i8s going to be more expensive than standard off-the-shelf oil solutions, but it’s meant for high performance engines, and it will typically last longer than non-synthetic oil does before it has to be changed once again. Just stick with recommended oil change intervals and keeping the vehicle in good running condition won’t be difficult.
Keep it Clean
Whether you live up in the north, or down south, it’s still important to keep your luxury vehicle clean on a regular basis. Bring it to the car wash at least once a week to wash off any muck, salt and other debris that accumulate. This interval only has to be followed for a vehicle that is driven on a regular basis. Keeping the vehicle clean helps prevent rust and will keep the paint from fading out and wearing as much over time.
Keep it Covered or Housed
The last thing you want to do is leave that shiny new Jaguar sitting out in the driveway all year long. Not only will the sun slowly fade away that pristine paint job, but all the rain, sleet and snow that falls on the vehicle will wear it down as well. It’s important to keep this type of a vehicle in the garage or at the very least parked under a carport with a protective cover in place.
Rely on these practices and you’re vehicle will stay in top condition and resell for more when the time comes to let it go. Keeping a luxury vehicle in good shape isn’t difficult, but it does require a bit more time and work.
The Jaguar F-Type is sexier and sleeker than ever, but sporty looks aren’t the only thing that the latest F-Type has improved on. The vehicle has a range of new and exciting features that customers will be looking forward to.
High Performance Audio
To make the package even more desirable Jaguar is including a 770-watt Meridian sound system. The system offers a superb surround experience and top audio quality that will make it even more enjoyable to listen to music while bolting down the road.
Improved Driving Mechanics
The F-Type is one of the few vehicles out on the market that still offers a manual transmission and they do it quite well. The manual shifts with precision and comfort. It’s fun to drive and a good solid option for anyone still looking for a manual in a newer vehicle. The one downside to opting for the manual is that it’s only available with the rear-drive versions of the vehicle. If you want the newly offered all-wheel drive system, you’ll have to choose an automatic transmission to go with it as well.
Any tech enthusiasts will enjoy the tech upgrades Jaguar made to the new F-Type. It now comes with a range of Apple and Android functions that allow drivers to unlock and start the vehicle remotely. They can even roll down the windows of the car using the smartphone. This connected capability makes it easier than ever before to keep control of your car and make it perform the way you want it to. It of course will have improved media that will go along with that enhanced Audio system nicely.
Let’s face it, most people who buy the Jaguar F-Type like to go fast, and won’t object to more power. The top trim level of the F-Type, the R trim, has 55 more HP than before and is now sitting at 550 HP. It’s faster and more exciting to drive, and it’s now available in both coupe and convertible styles.
Sexier than Ever
All those enhancements are available without sacrificing the sexy sleek look of the Jaguar F-Type. The vehicle remains as compact and edgy as it’s always been. It’s got curves in all the right places. Exotic air scoops that cool the brakes while making the car more attractive to look at. It’s the F-Type shape at it’s best, and if you were just after a nice looking vehicle the F-Type would make sense for looks alone, even without factoring in all the other improvements the vehicle has.
There’s a whole slew of reasons to love the new Jaguar F-Type. It’s a major improvement on an already awesome car, and there’s more than enough reasons to trade in last year’s model for the next generation.
It’s no secret that Jaguar has been developing and testing wearable technology for drivers. They want to get more information from the people riding in and operating their vehicles. This technology could be used to make driving today safer, and make self-driving cars safer to operate as well in the future. To help advance that technology Jaguar decided to test some of their wearable equipment at Wimbledon to find out when the most exciting events were happening at the many different courts.
The Theory Behind the Technology
Jaguar theorized that by getting biometric readings on many of the attendees at the Wimbledon games they could find out when the exciting stuff was happening at the many different courts. They simply strapped some of their scanners on a selection of the viewers and relied on the technology to switch between court views and to gather data throughout the event.
The Tech in Practice
If you visit the Jaguar Twitter Feed or take a look at the Wimbledon website it’s easy to see the technology in action. Jaguar shows exciting snippets from the various events throughout Wimbledon and they are all based on valuable biometric feedback that the company’s devices collected. It gives viewers more insight into how people at the event feel and lets fans look back on important events they have missed as well.
The technology simply explains the collective feelings of tech wearers during specific events that occur during the match. You can find out when someone was anxious, exhilarated, focused and even feeling insightful. This is all information that the automaker could collect from drivers as well to learn more about them and adjust the way a vehicle responds.
Translating the Technology into the Automotive World
While it’s pretty cool to see how Wimbledon fans feel at the event as they are watching matches unfold, it’s even cooler to think about how Jaguar is going to make use of this technology in its own products later on. Soon vehicles will take biometric information into account to help the driver make better decisions and to keep them safe while out on the road. It’s expected that the technology will help alleviate tired driving issues, and problems that occur from things like road rage or even distracted driving. As Jaguar gets real world testing information from events like Wimbledon the company is demonstrating its technology while gathering useful data that will help to make that technology even more effective over time.
Jaguar always seems to be at the leading edge when it comes to automotive technology. Holographic heads up displays and advanced roadway scanner systems sound pretty futuristic, but these are technologies that Jaguar already showed off and has made use of in the past. Now the automaker wants to create vehicles that detect the health of drivers, monitor brain and heart activity and predict the future movements of the driver.
According to Wolfgang Epple, Jaguar’s technology director, the company believes that many of the technologies being used in Aerospace and medicine could be incorporated into vehicles to improve road safety.
Are You Sleeping?
One of the most important technologies is the brain monitoring system. Jaguar wants to use this type of setup to figure out if a driver is paying attention to the road or sleeping while driving. Jaguar plans to test a driver for alertness and then use vibrations or noises to wake up the driver. The system sounds good for use today, and would certainly help some drivers avoid accidents, but Jaguar is really developing it for the future. The automaker firmly believes that self-driving vehicles will be a reality one day, and from the looks of things that day will come pretty soon. When self-driving vehicles become more popular it’s likely that the driver of a vehicle will still have to take over at certain points along a trip. It makes sense to be able to check that a driver is paying attention and ready to take control of the vehicle. That’s what this technology can offer.
A Simpler Media System
I’m sure that plenty of driving accidents occur while drivers mess with their stereos trying to find the right song. Another technology Jaguar is working on uses cameras to try and determine what button a driver will press before they press it. The system could rely on ultrasonic waves to vibrate a driver’s finger mid-air so they know the car registered the movement, and the driver could make adjustments faster and have his eyes off the road for a shorter period of time. The system sounds pretty cool in theory, but could also be pretty annoying if it isn’t completely accurate.
Keeping Your Speed in Check
Another system Jaguar is working on is a haptic feedback gas pedal. The idea behind the pedal is to make drivers more aware of what they are doing. The pedal would vibrate when exceeding the speed limit, or when getting too close to a car you’re trailing.
Jaguar continues to develop and adapt exciting technology for use in the automotive industry. It’s clear the automaker is making features for vehicles that may not be produced for years in the future still, but all of that hard work should help the automaker stay out in front when it comes to technology and help keep it a popular brand that people keep coming back to.
Pot holes are a real issue for luxury vehicles. Not only are they unpleasant to drive over, but they are also damaging to the vehicle itself. Learning how to spot these obstructions in the road and coming up with ways to either slow down for them or avoid them will help extend key suspension components in luxury vehicles which is a good goal to shoot for. Land Rover is currently testing out a system that does just that.
The system relies on connecting different vehicles to one another using an information system to share pothole information. This information will let you know when a pothole is coming up in the road and give you an opportunity to slow down in time to avoid most of the damage. This information will also be shared with those responsible for road maintenance, in the hopes that something will be done about them faster.
Locating the Holes
The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport models both come with a MagneRide active suspension system that has sensors that monitor motion and suspension height. By looking at these two pieces of information, Land Rover should be able to tell when a driver hits a pothole. When the information is collected it will be immediately added to the system and made available for other drivers out on the road.
Scanning for Holes
While recording potholes after they’ve been hit is a good way to protect future drivers, it doesn’t do much for the driver about to hit the hole. This is why Land Rover is also planning to develop a camera system that spots the hole before it is even hit in the first place. A stereo camera will be installed at the front of the vehicle and it will scan the road ahead. When it sees major holes in the road the driver will be notified and can take action before hitting the hole. It’s possible the system will even automatically apply the brakes in the future when it’s certain that the drive will hit the hole.
This type of system is just one of the exciting future developments that will help drivers navigate roadways more safely and comfortably. Connecting cars together to share information is a common goal shared by many automakers and is a technique that may be used in automatic vehicles in the future. While sharing information between Jaguar and Land Rover drivers is a good start, it would be even more beneficial if information was also shared between other car brands that are out on the roads more frequently. It’s unclear how long the technology will be in development before being released, but it’s pretty cool to think that someday potholes will be mostly avoidable.
